In my devotional reading today I read from Numbers 11. Verse 4 talks about a group of people with Gods people AA they traveled in the wilderness. These may have been some of the Egyptians that came along with the Isrealites in the exodus. Or they simply may have been some of the Isrealites just complaining. In any case the Bible refers to them as "rabble."
The discontented, unsatisfied hearts of these people rubbed off on Gods people... turning hearts of thankfulness into hearts of greed for more and more.
I've noticed in my own life how I have allowed the world around me to influence my desire for "more" rather than being content with what I have. There will always be that conflict to face. But the more of God in my life the less I desire or notice the "things" of this world.
